June, 2010 Daytime

In America is our individual and governmental generosity (i.e. welfare, food stamps) aiding and abetting laziness and effortless behavior? What ever happened to you reap what you sow?
What is honesty?
Should guilt be used as a learning tool?
How do you know you have a soul?

  1. The following are some of the discussion threads (or bullet points) from our conversation. Feel free to comment, and check back shortly for more.
Should the government allow the population to be poor? Where is the shame; motivation; and honesty in our citizens? Welfare is perfectly legal-why feel shame? Over time we have swayed from individual to governmental generosity. Corporations get welfare too. Corporations also give (i.e. Carnegie, Bill and Melinda Gates). We need to take care of our people; women and children in the lifeboats first. Would you let your neighbor starve?

  2. Continuing the thread of our conversation...
The government can and should employ people. Can Washington be trusted to distribute welfare well? Participate in sustainable development; give people the tools to help themselves. Should helping be compulsory or voluntary? Are people poor by their own fault? Instill pride in people while we give them money. Do we have a moral obligation to take care of ourselves? Have we sown the proper attitudes in our children? We all take money when it is given to us (i.e. stimulus money, government rebates). Isn't it human nature to take a handout? We need to train people to be self reliant. There are different groups of people who need to be treated differently: the abject poor who are without hope; those who work but slip behind; those who abuse the system.
Any thoughts on these discussion points?
